Sometimes carbon tracking is hard to see, and it can ground out the spark instead. The oldsmobile quad four had carbon tracking problems with the coil cover/ distributor. There if carbon tracking was grounding out spark, it was at least noticeable as it seem to kill ignition to two cylinders.

carbon tracking is shorting. anywhere there is a spark, it can happen. its a flat out short. its the shortest, easiest jump for the electricity. it can happen in the cap, thru the wire anywhere, along the plug, anywhere between coil and end of the plug. reason why I wont use cheap shit. cheap caps that have aluminum contacts, cheap plug wires, cheap plugs. all that stuff doesn't cost much to buy new. you wont EVER find my ass buying any ignition parts USED!!! its all affordable to buy high quality stuff. as an automotive technician, my thought is if you don't have money to keep your car running correctly, and buy cheap crap, its just going to cost you more in the long run. I see it all the time.
