just bought an '84 eagle wagon for a winter daily. 4.2L, auto transmission, everything else is manual. main selling point for me was the fact that it was sitting on all terrains... while it isn't the sorriest car i've dragged home, it still needs some lovin'. the transmission seems to be slipping, more so in 2wd, and the car will stall if you try to go from park to reverse to drive. there are no issues if you go from park to drive, or if you go from reverse to park to drive. what am i looking at for repairs? this is the first car i've owned equipped with an automatic transmission.

as soon i finish moving into the new place, i'll get some pictures up.

welcome to evo!!! much knowledge to be had floating around here. the stock carburetors on eagles are known junk. they will cause an issue like what you say. and many other issues. then there is the useless miles of vacuum lines everywhere. as you get to mess with the car a little more, and give more detailed info, many of us here will help get your bird flying high again! it will take many checks to find what is wrong. someone will hit it tho.

Welcome. Yes, if at all possible deal with the useless vacuum lines, that is if you don't have smog rules. The car will run much better. The trans issue may be related to erratic rpm caused by the vacuum lines and/or carb. I have had no problems with the stock carb, I have just removed much of the emission stuff which probably made for a cleaner engine and increased the mpg a bit.

thanks for the welcome.

the board is more active than i anticipated. i had a feeling the carb was garbage, i'll have to look into options.

the body is decent - very little rust but a few dents here and there, with almost no clear coat. interior is in good condition though, which makes up for it. its a comfortable car, coming from an '84 318i. are there any manuals as comprehensive as the bentley for the amc eagle?

Welcome! And as far as I know nothing close. I have a Bentley manual for the vw and its awesome. But there isn't that much to know on these cars and all those answers you are looking for probably come from someone on this site.

Welcome to Evo! Best we've got is each other's brains & the TSM. Driveline is basically Jeep, so that part is alot easier to find parts & help for, the rest gets a tad trickier.

added it to my insurance policy today, plan on registering it tomorrow. i've driven it ~50 miles already. really need to remember more ATF when i go out tonight. grime is from "testing the transmission" on the way home from buying it.
