Post subject:  Opinions please?

I have this friend interested in a car. The seller contacts him with this:
"It's very clean, color black. I am waiting on the title. I should get it 10 days or may be two weeks at the max.
I will be posting it for sale on craigslist when I get the title. If you can provide me with a contact phone number, I can give you a call before I post it for sale and you can come have a look at it and make me an offer."

Well my friend emails back asking the normal questions of:
How long have you owned it (due to what he said about the title), Does it have any problems, Any leaks, Does everything work, auto/manual, any rust, mileage, price, pictures (engine, exterior, interior, undercarriage & of any rust), etc.

Seller responds with this:
"It has 158000 miles very clean in and out, I'll sell it for kbb private party value or make me an offer we can work some thing out."
And sends a couple of exterior pictures

Friend checks KBB-
KBB is: Excellent= $1,771; Very Good= $1,646; Good= $1,596; Fair= $1,096

Friend asks again:
Auto/manual?, How long have you owned it?, Does it have any problems?, Any leaks?, Asks about car history (how many owners, any wrecks, what states its lived in, etc.)?, Why are you selling it?

Seller responds with this:
"Clear title, I am second owner, no rust automatic transmission. First owner from California. Will send more pictures when I get the chance probably late when I get off work or tomorrow morning. I do have another car and it is just sitting in my drive way I rarely get to drive it so my wife wants me to sell it and give her the money."

(24+ hours later) Friend emails back:
"Was wondering if you've had a chance to snag some more pics? Does it need any work? If so, what?
Does everything work properly? (gauges, knobs/buttons/handles/etc, heat/ac, shift smoothly, etc.)
Does it have any leaks? (engine, trans, tops, etc.) Does it run and drive good?
What kind of price were you thinking?
I am about 5 hours away so I would like as much information on it as possible."

Seller responds with:
"runs and drives no leaks, everything works. Kbb says up to $1800 , I purchased this car for $2300 so I am gonna say $1650 or best reasonable offer."

(3 days go by) Friend emails back:
"How long have you owned it?, When you can please send me some pictures. What would be the lowest price you'd take for it?"

Seller responds with:
"Couple months. I am test driving it today to make sure every thing works.
I noticed the air condition blowing cold air but not very cold as it should. The temp. here is 93 degrees, so it is either because it is too hot out side or it needs recharge. Also I noticed the car temp gauge going above the middle level almost to the red mark after a 25 minutes drive. I pulled over and let the car engine cool down .I did not notice any coolant leaks, and the coolant is still topped up o the max level.I noticed air bubbles in the radiator overflow tank caused by air pressure. I had a mechanic check the car, couldn't find any thing, He checked the oil to see if it is mixed with water, however, the oil was good no moister in the oil.He checked for any white smoke coming out the tail pipe, however, no white smoke was identified.
He advised to install a new radiator cap with a lever and keep the lever in the up position to allow coolant pressure out of the system so the car won't over heat.
I will send u more pictures in a bit. As for the price, I will take $1300 cash As-Is since the car seems to over heat and I am unable to determine the cause. The car runs and accelerates excellent no issues other than the above listed, every thing else works , no leaks. It has good tiers and it is in a very good to excellent cosmetic condition in and out( few scratches )
Thanks, and I apologize for the delay in my response."
And sends all other pictures requested.

I am not going to say anything. I want to hear what you guys think about this.

What is the vehicle?

Does he want something that could need work? Is he willing to buy something that needs work if he can get it for cheap? Offer him $1000 bucks or pass. I bet you can find another one that is in better running condition.

It's a Nissan NX (only made them here 3 years). And prefers no work needed.

Sounds like those are pretty rare...he might have to just bite the bullet on one he knows he can get kind of local. Or save up some more money and buy one in better condition. Though it might take some patience to find one.

I just see so many red flags myself:
1) he's only had it a couple of months.
2) he's just now sending off for the title.
3) $1,000 cheaper than what he paid for it just a couple months ago.
4) and the obvious 'mechanical' problem whatever it is. But probably a blown head gasket.

Sad, it is such a super clean car. Which is really hard to find.

Yeah, there are a lot of red flags there. I say wait. Find one in better running condition.

He's a curber. Could even be faked title with a lien on the car waiting.

Not sure EXACTLY what, but something just seems 'off' to me.

Now that that's out of the way, my opinion of this deal is that it smells like a dairy barn after the morning milking. :noclue: :eagle:
