But I test drove an '02 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport yesterday...and I'm considering the purchase. As nice as the Festy is on gas I'm wishing I had something newer as a daily. I'm still weighing the options on the one I took a look at...it has a bunch of maintenance things taken care of in the last year, but it does have 210k miles!!

I just love those little Impreza sport wagons. I personally think they are awesome.

the only thing I can say bad about some generations of Subaru's is... after about 230,000, the head gasket can leak. They are somewhat known for this.

The upside is, Everything else in the car is very good quality. And there are companies that will bring in Japanese used engines (JDM Japanese Domestic Motors) and sell them with less the 50k, for around $1100 (non-turbo'd)

It's almost well-worth to find a low cost Subaru with a great body/interior that already has that engine issue, get it for cheap (under $2000) and then find a dealer of these imported motors, and do the swap.

Or, you can replace the gasket...

We almost bought one, but we settled for a '08 Subaru Legacy. Love it.

Put some nos stickers on the festy. It'll make it appear brand new. Maybe a big plastic fake blower. Is that thing a 3 cylinder?

Yeah, the Festy is a Mazda B3 engine and is a 4cyl. I did get a spoiler for it so that obviously makes it faster! :)

Yeah the previous owner has already replaced one of the headgaskets...not sure why they didn't just do both. Here is a list of everything he has done in the last year. He bought it with a bad transmission and has only put like 6k on it since getting it fixed.

The owner was a mechanic at a Lexus dealership. This is what he emailed me about the things he had done to it.

Work that's been done:

Timing belt
Water pump
Cam and crank seals
All associated idler pulleys and auto tensioner
Passenger side head gasket
Both valve cover gaskets
All accessory belts
WRX struts and springs all around
Rebuilt transmission
New catalytic converter
New spark plugs
Light weight crank pulley
New bulbs for speedo gauge
New polyurethane shifter bushings
Rear main for crankshaft
That's all I can remember, maybe a few more minor things.

He put it up on the lift even and let me take a look at it underneath. Looked pretty good!

Asking $3100. I think I can make a deal. He said it needs a new lower control arm bushing on the passenger side. Gonna see if he could maybe do that repair and I'll take it for $3000. We'll see..

I don't want to be a Debbie Downer or shit on your parade but, be wary of a man who only replaces one head gasket....I only say this because when I bought my wife's Outback for her, it came with $6700.00 in work orders showing what had been done by the previous owner.....they too only replaced one head gasket. Within a week the other one failed. With the motor pulled for replacement, It came to our attention that the timing belt and water pump were both fucked(something they should have noticed when they had the engine out to replace the other head gasket a month earlier). If the guy seems totally trustworthy, more power to you and congrats on a good deal!!!
