You have to get V8 motor mounts to do this with. There is a fella who makes up these conversion mounts and at the moment I don't remember who he is. Perhaps someone else here can come up with his name and contact info. You need to reuse the Eagle's transmission so that you can mount the transfer case behind it. The 2WD transmissions have a different tailhousing that cannot just be swapped out easily. Is the 304 stock? If so, you will not gain that much HP for the work involved, unless you put in a large V8 later on. A 4.0 swap would be easier.

Welcome to AMC Evolution.

Many unless you buy a kit or build your own or only run 2wd.

If its just for shows, in my humble opinion, just leave the 4.2 in there. You can make them look nice and do things to make them more efficient. And, if you decide to use the car a lot, especially in 4WD, you will appreciate the low end torque of the 4.2 vs. the 304. Again, if you want the best of both worlds, low end torque and some extra zoom with minimal conversion work then a Jeep 4.0 would be your ticket.

if your looking for a little extra without a ton of fab work I'd say build a stroker using a 4.0 block and head

The smallest AMC V8 I'd even consider putting in an Eagle would be a 360. However, building a stroker is much more feasible if you're looking for power, and would be just as interesting in a show environment. If you're going great lengths to put in a V8, why not make it worthwhile and get some real power with like a 390 or 401? Otherwise, it's just a waste of effort and gas...
