a solid axle acts as a lever. (think of a teeter totter) when the left tire is pushed up (on a rock say) it pushes the right tire down. that's why real off road rigs still use solid axles, usually long travel 4 link sort of suspensions. an independent suspension will just drop or suck up a bump, hole, what ever. that's why they ride much nicer, but they don't push on the opposite side. say your crossing a wash on a dirt road. the tire dropped will drop down as far as suspension lets it, and high tire will just push up on the suspension. a solid axle will force the low tire down harder to remain in contact with the ground as best it can. independent suspension is not great for off highway.
