Alright so I am in the process of deleting as much vaccum and wiring from the engine as I can, but I dont know these systems or all the components well.
Here is a little background info: I am used to chevy small blocks. I want my engine bay to be as simple and clean as possible. I am converting to a Skip White HEI and good ol fashion 4 barrel carb (possibly qjet not sure yet) on an offy intake and 4.0 head. I would also like to convert the 4wd to shift on the fly.

Does anyone have a simple explanation and diagrams of the parts of the vaccum system that make 4wd work?

Can I completely remove the ecm and wires connected to it without any ill effects or does it control anything besides the engine?

and who wants to play a game of name that part? or trash or important?

I know i'm asking for a lot of info here but figured this is the best place for answers thanks a lot in advance and sorry if any of these questions are stupid obvious ones.

File comment: this is the passanger fender. what are those 2 relays on the left? Is the black black one a starter relay? and I'm assuming that's the ecm below it.

You can remove all vacuum lines except for dist. advance and 4x4 system. The 4x4 system is just a couple hard plastic lines. No wires in it at all Everything else is emissions or cold start stuff. The relays...one is for the horn...the other might be for the fog lights. The emissions control box is under the passanger foot kick panel. The ecm controlls the dist. Spark but the new skip whiet might take care of that not sure.

same here got 85 Eagle wagon looking to delete as much stuff on it to make it simple. Would the repair manual or tune up chart from the 70's 258 work to help delete some of this stuff?

Yes it would a bit. The vacuum diagram you have is what you should do IF you want to remove all of the emissions stuff.

The storage cans should be right under the hood. The 4x4 will work without them you just might have to take your foot off the gas to creat the vacuum

Driver side storage appeared t be all emissions related, passenger side storage was tied into cruise control, maybe, well my cruise still worked. If you have the gauge pod option then be very mindful of the vac lines with the emissions. I disconnected my vac gauge and im thinking it was possibly tied in with the disty vac system, otherwise it was probably the lines at the back of the intake manifold. The lines for the transfer case are small ones, you can trace them all going through the firewall and at the t-case. I never accidentally disconnected any of it when I gutted mine. On yours, i'd say 99% can be torn out of there. Even the disty line can be taken out, its ported vac advance anyway.

Im pretty sure your already free of the electronic carter so thats already a big one out of the way. Aside from ripping out all the electrical harness for the interior and lights the only other thing I think you can do is bypass the computer from the ignition box on the passenger side. Its called the nutter bypass.

You already have it good though lol

Looks like mine did before I started removing the AIR stuff. Keep the charcoal cannister or you will be spraying gas out of your cap and elsewhere while wheeling or driving gravel roads.
