Was just wanting to check an see if any year valve cover will work on this engine? I found a aluminum valve cover from a 81 model Eagle. Will this work on my 85 Eagle with the plastic valve cover?

As long as you have the AMC/Jeep 4.2 inline 6 head it will fit.

the 87 - 90 amc jeep 258 valve covers are aluminum, but the base shape is different than the ?-86 design that was made out of plastic, and I think I remember iowaeagle saying something about the earlier metal valve covers being different as well.

I just checked, 1981 is a plastic valve cover model. as someone may be interested, dorman part number for the plastic cover is 264-974. the price was listed for around $260  I think I would go with an aluminum valve cover unless you are trying to stay original.

yes, they do make an aftermarket valve cover to replace the OEM plastic valve cover. I will try to get a decent picture of the 87-90 OEM valve cover. here is what the aftermarket valve cover looks like:

81-86 are a plastic valve cover. they have their own pattern. 80-65 iirc are the same tin/stamped steel valve cover. the 87-90 valve cover is different yet. I haven't messed with the 87-90 valve cover, so I don't know if they are the same as the 4.0 or not. a GOOD valve cover for the 81-86 valve cover kit is going to run around $100 +/- $20 or so.
