I got a 85 Amc Eagle with 258 with carter carb just wanting to know how to be a good way to fix it? The carb has been adjusted several times since I have owned the car in under a year. The carb acts up under 50 mph like it is not opening up all the way or something. An when you are at a light at a dead stop in stop an go traffic an go to move you just touch the gas an the car will want to lunge with you like the carb needs adjusted or something an 50 mph or above it runs fine. The car sat 8 years before I got it an have cleaned the engine out an run mystery marvel & fuel system cleaner 92 octane an all that in it an it still does this. Is there something wrong within the carb or just need to replace it all together? An which would be better carb for this engine a motorcraft 2150 2 bbl or Holley 4160/8007 4 bbl carb?

Here's a good place to start your research.

What fuel system cleaner? I use Amsoil PI (Performance Improver) which has saved many injectors and carbs after "professional" cleaners didn't.
If your motor has internal noises (clicking lifters or piston slap) it will trigger the knock sensor which retards timing waaaay back and cuts power. It could be the metering rods are stuck too. Vacuum leaks? Hows the compression?

I put mystery marvel in it & use 92 octane on every fill up & gumout complete fuel system cleaner. An it dont have any vacuum leaks & compression an stuff I guess fine it runs fine no lights on dash nothing just hear the noise in the engine if you listen c;lose an the car is loud were it is carb minus a couple very small holes on the muffler.

Did you rebuild the carb or just clean it? Sitting 8 years did it no good. A good replacement would be a non feedback carter BBD, after doing the nutter bypass of course.

did not rebuild carb or nothing just cleaned engine an no body round here knows anything bout a nutter bypass on these cars. just seeing if something might fix this carb besides rebuilding it going to replace it hopefully this year or next. I ran mystery marvel & gumout complete fuel system cleaner in the car an that is it.

Carnuck, did the original Eagle computer actually have a knock sensor? Was this only on certain years, or every year? If so, is it possible to bypass the knock sensor at all?

honeybadger HAD the feedback carb. never found a "knock" sensor on the motor. not worried now as it runs a 4.0 anyway.
