Not that uncommon. Blame GM.

 Buddies XJ did the same thing, which was great since he lost the key for it. Just had to make sure not to turn it to column lock, or else we'd be humped.

Yeah that seems about right, my eagle does it, the gf's eagle does it, my jeep does, and so does the malibu  , it's quite handy at times though, trunk access, locking doors in the winter while run into the store quick, starting multiple vehicles during snow removal shuffles, .

the 2 sx4's and wagon all do that. can pull the key out in any position. the wagon had tumblers that got jacked up in it. would take about 10 min of screwin with it to get it to finally unlock, so i just left it that way with no key in it. wife locked it one day shuttin it off, and it would NOT let go again. so now, it starts with a pair of needle nose pliers. well, till i finally decide to buy a new cylinder for it.

My european 1981 Eagle also does the same, it start without any key, but you can lock the cylinder "turning" to the first position towards the driver. I think you will need the key to lock the ignition cylinder in this way, and after do that, you will need again the key as any other car.

During a lot of time I thought the cylinder was damaged, even I bought one new from Rockauto, but finally one mechanic discovered for me how it work, and it is pathetic, maybe in the 70´s not be a problem, but now it seems a joke.

I keep silence about this "joke" with my mechanics.
