I've figured out now that the jeep xj is basically the second generation of the amc hornet/concord/eagle mix. They have both lasted about the same amount of time for a production run. 17 years for the xj, 18 for the hornet. Both have gone through a body and interior update. Both were two wheel drive, or four wheel drive variants. They both were unibody, and a pickup was grafted from both designs, although only one made it to production.

Pretty much right on the money. Roy Lunn shared with me he was allowed to develop the Eagle as a niche vehicle while he refined the XJ.
