So, on the keychain to my AMX there is a little diamond shaped tag engraved with "RECORD NUMBER & DESTROY SWAG"
with a 5 digit code on it

Was this something from the factory to record key cuts in case an owner lost all sets of keys or to prevent doubles of the same cut from being made?

EDIT:
But also, if the tag was supposed to be recorded and destroyed, why do I still have it? Can't be many of these left, are there?

it is a number that can be used to order a duplicate set of keys from a dealer or lock smith.

I remember those knock outs on the old B&S keys. I forget if the GM style ones had those or not and I had several new AMC's with GM columns. Sometimes my memory is not fully engaged.

they are used on replacement lock cylinders form NAPA for sure. I have bought 3 new lock cylinders from napa. they all have that tag on them with the new keys included in the lock cylinder. that code is for a locksmith to make you a new key if it was to be lost. (well, most locksmiths can make one if they have a code book.) just leave that tag in the glove box. someone will take care of the car for ya. ;-)

Just don't post a pic of your key, people who can read keys don't need a code to make a replicate  . lol

...or give shagg one glance of them, to where he can clearly see the cuts.

With many AMC's it does not matter since the ignition locks are fairly worn out.
