My guess its a cobbled together one. Which if not done right the strength of the uni body was compromised. The true prototypes were designed much like the later Cherokee pickups would be. Kind of like the AMC Eagle was a test bed for the unibody Cherokees.

You are correct.....mostly. The first one shown in this thread is not a Cowboy. The one you linked to is. There were actually 3 of them built but this is the only one that still exists. It has been repainted but the colors are original. One of the prototypes was destroyed in crash testing and another was crushed when AMC's upper management killed the program. The sole survivor is owned by a friend of mine whose Dad was a part of the development group that built the prototypes. He managed to save it from getting crushed and it's been in the family ever since. It can still be seen on the road but doesn't leave the garage very often. It's certainly one of the rarest AMC's to exist.
