I never actually checked the rod bearings, though obviously I wish I had. The pistons and flexplate looked fine, and the oil pump is new. I believe the connecting rod on cylinder 6 is bad, took off the plug wire and the knock went away. I didn't have time or money for machining or new rods, let alone bearings and rings. When I replace it next time, I'll get a lower end from a friend or use the 4.0 lower end if possible. At least the hard parts are done, taking the engine out is pretty straightforward now.

I think the lack of power may have been my transmission slipping. The rubber lines to my external cooler were a little pinched between the radiator and the body, and my fluid might still be a little low from leaking while I moved the trans around. I rerouted the lines, but won't get to test for a while since the car will now be sitting for a couple months.

Nah, I always use the higher end Bosch or Purolator filters and full synthetic, with the exception of dino for break in.

So captspillane was generous enough to lend me a spot in his garage for the time being so I could swap in a 4.0 he had sitting around. I removed the wire from cylinder 6 and limped the Eagle about 35 minutes on 5 cylinders. The transmission was apparently very low on fluid, so I filled it and it was ok temporarily. I might have to do something about that too.

This is the 4.0 that's going in, I'm swapping all the accessories from the 4.2. The exhaust is already finished, so I shouldn't have to mess with that. I'm using the oil pan from the 4.2 as well. Anything I'll have to look out for other than the extra ribbing on the block?

use your 4.2L water pump. 4.0 spins bass ackwards. use your 4.2 distributor/ignition system. prafeston has a very good write up he quizzed me and a couple others on that have done this. theres lots of little things. to much for my crs ass to remember right now. o ya, GET A GOOD QUALITY fuel pump!!! cheapies are that, cheap junk. and it needs to mount back at the tank. electric pumps push 10x better than they pull. (mechanical pumps pull better than push.) go look up rafe's 4.0 swap write up.

The 4.0 is now ready to drop in, but I will probably be swapping in a different 998 transmission with a deep steel pan as well. Mine leaks like crazy when sitting and simply won't seal. Either that, or I'll just use the deep pan.

The verdict on my 4.2 engine was piston slap on cylinder 6, due most likely to a loose wrist pin, and a little bit of subsequent connecting rod bearing wear. There was bad scoring on the skirt of that piston and cylinder wall. It's a shame because everything else looks fine and the engine didn't use any oil.

Well at least you got the even better upgrade of a full 4.0 engine now. Hope it works well and swaps in fast. Are you a bit behind schedule with everything now? Back at school without your Eagle?

Yes, I'll hopefully be finishing it 2 weeks from now when I go home again. I'm currently driving captspillane's 1980 IH Scout Traveler 4spd Turbodiesel.
