Howdy all,

Found a immaculate condition Spirit that I'm considering making an offer on.

Question : Can it be converted to an Eagle? The body looks like it's stamped from the SX/4, and if it can be then I'm going to make an offer on it in a few months.

I'd like to transplant my Cherokee drivetrain into it with rear diff and front axle, as well as a swap to a NP242.

The Spirit came first. The SX/4 is stamped from a Spirit. But you would have to make room for the transfer case. Carnuk and his buddy did a Spirit to Eagle build called. "Spirit of the Eagle" :)

It can be found over on the Den.

Ugh, "Dodge Spirit"... it is nice though. So nice it would almost be a shame to change it, but that's your decision.

A Cherokee drivetrain is even a challenge to put in an Eagle, let alone a Spirit. If you're going with the Jeep straight axle up front, you'll need to figure out a whole new custom suspension. If you change to a Jeep 4.0, you'll need to customize the exhaust and modify the battery tray. The fuel injection will require a whole new fuel system and a hell of a lot of electrical wiring. If the Cherokee has an AW4, that will require trans mount mods, two new driveshafts, and the Jeep computer. The NP242 will need a new shifter and some modification to the rear driveshaft. The new rear axle will at least need new shock mounts welded to it.

The Spirit will further require welding in an entire Eagle trans tunnel among other things.

If you're up to the task, by all means do it. It would be a pretty sweet ride when you finish.

Actually, you only need to mod the driver's side of the floor tunnel under and behind the driver's seat on an '80 up AMC Spirit to do an AW4 install. You need a whole Eagle for parts to do the swap. Prior to '79 the holes for the suspension weren't there.
